ASTROLOGY AS A FRAMEWORK FOR UNDERSTANDING THE FUTURE
As astrology filters into mass consciousness and the general public becomes more knowledgeable and interested, there is always the possibility that a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing. As in all information that comes to us through mass media we can use it to scare ourselves or to attempt the more difficult task of making rational sense of the irrational so to speak. Try as we might to think happy thoughts our inner primitive animal has anxieties regarding what lies ahead. It’s hard to tell if those anxieties are caused by a true sense of the future or the manipulation of our sense of things by various media (which may include the actual mediums…)
Astrology helps us to frame our sense of what is happening, what has happened and what might happen. As this summer approaches so do some very intense and difficult astrological configurations. In this article I will offer a description of the planetary events and some insight into what they might symbolize. This is not the same as predicting what I personally think will happen. I actually don’t know what will happen. But it is possible to tell the story through astrological symbolism, nonetheless. As you read this, if you are so inspired I welcome your posts on this topic.
THE ASTROLOGICAL EVENTS
What follows is a list of the astrological events. Although I am listing specific dates for these events I don’t think the dates are as important as much as is the collective theme they suggest for the whole period. An interesting overview is that all these events are happening in the early degrees of the cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. Cardinal signs are the first signs of the season. This suggests to me that whatever does lay ahead it is the start of a new season for us as humans and as a planet. Beginnings are often difficult but inevitable if there is to be change. Change is necessary but this is not to be confused with the myth of progress.
URANUS ENTERS ARIES MAY 27 2010
It will be there until mid August when it retrogrades back to Pisces. In 2011 Uranus will enter Aries again and stay there for a number of years. Uranus is the planet of revolution and revelation. It rules electricity and brings light as well as the shocks. Aries is the sign of the individual. It is fiery; hot, passionate, righteous. Perhaps this suggests a time for revolution and/or revelation in the hearts and minds of individuals. This is not a symbol of the frog slowly boiling to death as the water heats up; quite the opposite in fact. The last time Uranus was in this sign was in the 1930s. Interestingly enough, early in that difficult decade Pluto was in Cancer, Saturn transited Capricorn and even Jupiter got involved in the sign of Cancer. This is not an exact comparison. Many things are different but it’s the same planets and they were in cardinal signs although not in the early degrees. The theme of needing a big breakthrough is there, however. And the stock market continues to thrash and misbehave. Uranus reminds us that chaos and change go hand in hand.
Jupiter enters Aries: June 6, 2010. At the moment of this astrological event both Uranus and the Moon will also be at zero degrees of Aries. If you imagine the planets as characters then Jupiter is the great judge of the heavens. Jupiter is righteous and seeks truth. When we experience its difficult side the problem is in the belief that there is only one truth: dogma. Jupiter at its best is about passion for truth combined with an understanding of the relative nature of it. So here we have the Judge entering the sign of passionate personal intensity (Aries) as he is supported by Uranus (revelation/revolution) and the Moon which is about our emotions. Hot, hot, hot! Uranus and Jupiter together can be about quantum leaps in understanding. They were conjunct in Libra (a cardinal sign, which opposes Aries) in 1969 on the day of the first lunar landing. ‘One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.’ Funny thing, even the moon was in Libra that day, although not exactly conjunct as it is on June 6th.
Eclipse June 26th: Moon conjuncts Pluto. Sun conjuncts Mercury. Jupiter and Uranus square Sun and Moon. The G 20 meets today. An eclipse sensitizes the place where it happens; meaning that things stirred up by it can ripple out into the world as long as that degree has activity from planets. The fact that this one is happening at a degree that will stay hot at least until the end of 2011 suggests that issues raised at this time will be significant or sensitive until then. A commonly held concept about lunar eclipses is that they stir up emotions and some kind of anxiety for 6 weeks before and after at least. An interesting thing about this eclipse is that it squares (challenges) the ascendant (face, personality) of the city of Toronto where the G20 is meeting.
Jupiter conjunct Uranus: June 8th and September 18th. We could say this is active for that entire time. This takes us back to the first piece about June 6th. These dates are simply an intensification of that period because on these specific days the aspect is exact. I suppose quantum leaps can happen in all directions. One thing to remember here is that change often looks like chaos in it’s early stages precisely because as we leave the old order behind we have not created the new order and the in-between has no ‘rules’ for a while. This is also exciting because it allows for all manner of innovation. ‘One small step…’
